Cozy Mysteries Where the Cat Is More Than a Sidekick

I have a weakness for cozy mysteries where the animal actually matters.

Not just a cat sleeping in the bookstore window.

Not just a dog on the cover because, apparently, mysteries sell better if something furry is looking suspicious.

I mean the kind of animal character who has opinions, gets involved, and changes the way the mystery unfolds.

That’s one reason I was interested in DeAnna Drake’s Purr-fect Relic Cozy Mystery series. The books feature Rebecca and Aneksi, an immortal talking cat who was once Cleopatra’s pet. The series is set in the Southern California town of Citrus Grove and mixes murder investigations with cursed Egyptian artifacts, a quirky community, and a cat who is very much part of the action.

That, of course, caught my attention. And…full disclosure DeAnna is a friend of mine and I’ve been a fan of her work for a while.

Grok, the Maine Coon in my Amanda Warren Cozy Animal Mysteries, is psychic, opinionated, and absolutely convinced that humans need supervision. He doesn’t exist just to curl up in Amanda’s lap while she solves the crime.

Frequently, he would prefer to solve it himself.

For me, that’s part of the fun of writing a cozy animal mystery. When the animal has agency, the relationship between sleuth and sidekick becomes another source of clues, conflict, humor, and occasionally complete exasperation.

DeAnna Drake describes her books as paranormal cozy mysteries where magical cats, small-town charm, and murder collide. Her Laguna Bay series also features a talking cat, while the Purr-fect Relic books center on Aneksi and supernatural artifacts.

My Amanda Warren books are lighter on the paranormal side. Grok’s psychic abilities are there, but the mysteries are still traditional whodunits: suspects, motives, clues, red herrings, and Amanda trying to work out what really happened.

Grok mostly considers this an inefficient human process.

I think that’s why talking cats and magical animal companions work so well in cozy mysteries. They can add something slightly impossible without taking away the familiar pleasures of a small town, an amateur sleuth, and a puzzle waiting to be solved.

And sometimes the cat knows exactly what’s going on.

He’s just deciding whether you deserve to know yet.
